I've been pottering away in the background over the last few weeks on a few plans for the new @calmcocoa subscription box I'm launching very soon (and yes there will be an option to purchase a one off box each month too).

One of the things I really love about chocolate is the practically endless possibilities for creating delicious things. But it's also part of my 'informal' mindfulness practice.

I love the quiet working with chocolate brings to my mind as when I'm in the kitchen I have to focus pretty fully on it. If I'm trying to do too many things at once or am hurrying, things go wrong. And sometimes time flies when I get into true chocolate flow. The extra bonus is that I get something tasty at the end of it too. Somehow we're in August! I seem to have lost the l

Somehow we're in August! I seem to have lost the last month - maybe partly through pottering around the garden followed by slow cups of coffee? I've also found my brain has slowed a little in the warmer weather 😁. I'm trying to be kind with what it needs at the moment (not always so easy!).

We're also very gradually getting closer to our lovely annexe being ready for short holiday lets. This will help us with the upkeep of our home, which is a beautiful listed building. As it's an older house, it will always need a little tlc to look after it for the long term (one of the responsibilities we were very happy to take on when we decided to buy it).

It's really gratifying to see things coming together - mostly through Johnny's hard work! There are still a few weekends of work to go, but we're almost there... (and I'll share pictures soon - especially if you fancy a little jaunt to Mid Wales!)

I had an unintentionally quiet week with a little time off and then a little time for recovery from the time off 😂 . I'm definitely out of practise with being round big crowds of people, but had a really lovely time at Secret Garden Party (except for the pretty disgusting toilets, but the music just about made up for that).

It was actually really nice to let my brain have a little rest from things and to spend time with good friends. And I discovered I really like camping, which I'd sort of forgotten! Yes I know it's a bit weird, but the warm weather

Yes I know it's a bit weird, but the warm weather is making me want to bake! Actually it's partly because our house is lovely and cold (sorry this is not meant to rub it in if you're feeling a bit hot and bothered!). While it can get a bit chilly in the winter, it's kind of perfect for safely storing chocolate and cooling down down in the heat.

It's also because I find non-work baking really calming. I like to get my hands stuck in - and of course there's the total pleasure of licking the bowl (and nibbling on a piece or two of chocolate). I grew up in a family of 5 kids and so it was a bit of negotiation about who got to lick the bowl, spoon or beaters (whisk). Now I only have to share it with my husband (when I'm feeling generous!) 😋

These are beautiful chocolate tahini cookies from the #BakeForSyria cookbook which I made once ages ago - and then totally forgot about the recipe. I used some beautiful @franceschichocolate Venezuelan 60% cocoa Caranero chocolate and it melted right through into the biscuits. Delicious. And perfect with a cup of chilled milk in the hot chocolate 😁 #chocolatecookies #baking

I'm not gonna lie, I've definitely had a few chall

I'm not gonna lie, I've definitely had a few challenges with my mental health this year - which I've found particularly difficult given my work. As a meditation teacher, I spend a lot of time supporting other people's wellbeing. But I also think because of this it's important for me to share my own challenges (even when it makes me feel a bit icky and vulnerable). The truth is that so many of the things I work on with other people are things I continue to work on within myself.

But this week I've also started to do something that I've felt the need to do for a while. I'm taking a slightly different approach to my meditation practice. I'm actually taking a deep dive into a specific meditation for a month as I've felt a real need to deepen my own practice and understanding. Just to break with tradition I'm doing this in the middle of a month in the middle of a year 😂. I guess there's no 'perfect' time to start something new.

I'm starting with Loving Kindness (or metta) meditation, a really beautiful compassion meditation. This is partly inspired by a Sharon Salzberg book leant to me (that I've been meaning to read and have FINALLY started). But also because it's a meditation that I'm feeling drawn to at the moment. I'm going to share a bit of my experience about this over the next few weeks on Insta, but will also go into a little more on a new Substack space I'm setting up.

This is a very special place tucked away at the back of our home - and has become a bit of a sanctuary for me. Even just popping up for a few minutes in my lunch break is a beautiful mental health boost. Especially as all the berries are coming out at the moment.
